Learning Programme
We believe that the development of children is achieved by making learning fun. Children are stimulated by planned and child initiated activities, which not only include play but educational elements as well. Learning is guided by our exceptional and passionate staff who skilfully support children’s learning and development with effective teaching. Through stimulating activities and learning opportunities we strive to make a difference and create the most solid foundation for your child’s future learning and development preparing them for school.
We follow a broad-based curriculum to ensure each individual child is supported and has a variety of opportunities to learn and develop in all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Accordingly, the EYFS Statutory Framework sets the foundation of our curriculum.
Our Learning Programme focuses on three prime skills of learning and four specific areas of knowledge.
THE 3 PRIME AREAS OF LEARNING ARE:
1 – Personal, Social and Emotional Development
This involves making relationships, and improving self-confidence and self-awareness. It also teaches children how to explore and manage their feelings and behaviour.
2 – Physical Development
Included in this area is moving and handling, as well as health and self-care.
3 – Communication and Language
This area involves listening and attention, understanding and speaking.
These prime areas begin to develop quickly in response to relationships and experiences. They are the foundation for all children, and they support learning in all other areas. The prime areas continue to be fundamental throughout the EYFS.
THE 4 SPECIFIC AREAS OF LEARNING ARE:
1 – Literacy
Reading and writing will be developed within this area.
2 – Mathematics
This area will enhance children’s knowledge of numbers, shapes, space and measure.
3 – Understanding the World
Included in this area is people and communities, the world, and technology.
4 – Expressive Arts and Design
Staff will support and assess children in exploring and using media and materials. At Preston Road, we place a large emphasis on children being imaginative.
The specific areas of learning include essential skills and knowledge. They grow out of the prime areas, and provide important contexts for learning.
